BACK ON TRACK

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Sept. 19, 2012) – The LIU Post women's soccer got a boost from junior forward Alexa Niciforo (East Islip, N.Y.), who slotted the game-winning goal in the second overtime period to lift the 24th-ranked Pioneers to a gutsy win over East Coast Conference rival Dowling College on Wednesday afternoon by a final score of 2-1.

The Pioneers improve to 5-1-1 overall and open ECC play with a 1-0 record, while Dowling goes to 5-2 on the season and 1-1 in conference action.

Freshman forward Susanne Vistnes (Randaberg, Norway) staked the Pioneers to an early lead in the game as she took a pass from fellow freshman Hanna Westerling (Alvadalen, Sweden) just pass the midfield line.  Vistnes beat a defender to position herself one-on-one with Dowling GK Melissa Guglielmo.  With two Golden Lions defenders bearing down on her, Vistnes quickly pulled the ball to her left, caught Guglielmo off her line, and booted a 10-yard shot into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

The Pioneers held the lead for the remainder of the half, with both teams taking four shots in the first stanza and Guglielmo turning away two while LIU Post senior goalkeeper Nicole Fierro (East Hampton, N.Y.) stopped three.

The second half opened with much of the same, as the teams matched each other evenly in both possession and shots.  Just under 20 minutes into the second half, a Pioneer foul awarded the Golden Lions a free kick about 40 yards out.  Erika Krumholz stepped up and sent a long cross to find Alexis Parrotta just to the left of the net.  Parrotta settled the ball and knocked a  short shot into the lower left corner for the equalizer.

Both teams had scoring chances in the 56th minute as Westerling got a header off on a low cross but was turned away by Dowling GK Sara Sullivan, who started the second half and posted five saves in the second stanza alone.  Just 20 seconds later, Niciforo had a good look as she ran down a loose ball, but her chip shot sailed just over the crossbar.

After a first OT period that saw the Pioneers hold a 4-1 advantage in shots, the Pioneers increased the offensive pressure heading into the second OT period.  Finally, in the 104th minute, Vistnes sent in a low bullet of a shot that ricocheted off Sullivan and bounced in front of the goal, setting the stage for Niciforo's game-winning tally.

The final box saw the Pioneers outshot Dowling by a final count of 18-12, while Dowling took 7 corners to only  for the Pioneers.  Sullivan made nine stops for the Lions, all of them coming after halftime, while Fierro totaled five stops for the game.

LIU Post continues ECC play this Sunday, hosting Roberts Wesleyan at 12 noon
